The BMC minimum standards of reporting checklist is intended as a tool for authors to transparently describe their research and ensure reproducibility. We encourage our authors to adhere to these standards when preparing their manuscript. In 2017 we announced that several BMC journals BMC Biology, BMC Ecology & BMC Medicine would begin accepting Registered Reports. This innovative approach to publishing allows authors to submit their rationale and methods for peer review before any experiments are conducted: shifting the emphasis from research results, to the scientific questions being asked and the strength of the study design. We also welcome presubmission inquiries; please email us at bmcbiologyeditorial@biomedcentral.com if you wish to inquire whether your manuscript may be appropriate for the series. Of the 28 manuscripts submitted following a positive response to a presubmission inquiry and for which a decision letter was available, 19 (68%) were accepted for publication.
