The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is a single, EU-wide signalling and speed control system that ensures interoperability between national railway systems. This telecommunications technology reduces the purchasing and maintenance costs of signalling systems, increases the speed of trains, raises the capacity of infrastructure and improves the level of safety. ERTMS, which stands for ‘European Railway Traffic Management System’, is the European standard for the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) and command and control systems.

The European Rail Traffic Management System has gradually been rolled out over the years, but  ERTMS is a scheme backed by the EU to improve interoperability of trains throughout Europe and improve signalling by creating a single European standard.

FRMCS – Future Rail Mobile Communication System, som planeras efter 2025 att successivt införas och ersätta det nuvarande systemet GSM-R som är en del av dagens ERTMS-specifikation. Specifikationerna är dock ännu inte klara och det kan ifrågasättas om de kommer vara klara i så god tid att de kan bli en del av installationerna i fordonen.

Despite this progress much work is still required to achieve an EU-wide deployment of an interoperable system. However, the ERTMS systems deployed so far do not yet constitute an interoperable system. Barriers to achieving interoperability include: Being compatible throughout Europe, ERTMS provides the European Union with a unique opportunity to create a seamless railway system, where trains may run from Barcelona to Warsaw without facing technical problems related to signalling.

Today, trains are equipped with up to seven different navigational systems. Each is extremely costly and takes up space on-board. A train crossing from one European country to another must switch the operating standards as it crosses the border. All this adds to travel time and operational and maintenance costs.
